DETAILED INFORMATION:

Where is Kirklees College? The College is located in West Yorkshire, in the North of England. It has two main learning centres, one in Huddersfield and one in Dewsbury. The Ceramics course is at the Dewsbury Centre, Wheelwright Campus. Dewsbury in situated between Leeds and Huddersfield, and is served by frequent trains and has a good road network. Course Description: The Foundation Degree in Ceramics is designed to help you gain all the right skills and understanding to function as a ceramicist in the contemporary world. Your time will be spent learning your craft, moving from the basics through to the development and clarification of your own unique ceramics practice. You will work with both two and three dimensional media, exploring construction, surface, colour, drawing, decoration etc. and learning the technicalities of working with ceramic materials. Additionally, the Ceramics course is supported by contextual studies which help to place art and design within the wider world, and business studies to provide an understanding of the promotion and management of visual work.

The Ceramics studio is well equipped with gas kilns, electric kilns and also has outdoor firing facilities. General studio space is also available to students.

The course is validated by Leeds Metropolitan University, which means that graduates receive a Leeds Metropolitan University Foundation Degree.

What is a Foundation Degree? A Foundation Degree is a nationally recognised qualification which provides students with a Foundation Degree (FdA) after two years of study. On completion of the Foundation Degree, it is possible to top-up to a BA Honours Degree through a year of further study available here at Kirklees College.

What are the entry requirements? Individual offers made to students may vary but the following provides typical entry requirements: School leavers with appropriate A Levels / National Diploma students / Foundation Diploma in Art and Design / Access to HE. Applicants would normally be required to hold GCSE (minimum grade C) in English Language.

UCAS Tariff Points: 180. Opportunities are also available to mature students with appropriate experience.

How will I be assessed? Work is submitted for assessment throughout the academic year. Modules have credit points attached to them, and at the end of the course of study, successful students will have accrued sufficient points for the award of a Foundation Degree.

What can I do after the course? The course offers progression opportunities into the world of contemporary ceramics. This would usually be as a self-employed designer-maker. Foundation Degree students may aslo progress to the Applied Arts BA(Hons) Top-up course, which is a multi-disciplinary crafts year, where ceramics can be pursued as a pathway.

What will it cost me? As with all Higher Education qualifications, you may have to pay tuition fees. It is usual to apply for a Student Loan, where your financial position will be considered in the light of your individual circumstances. The fees for 2012-2013 will be £5,950.

What other help can I get from the college? Our Student Support Services staff can offer advice and guidance on financial matters, accommodation and childcare. Counsellors are available to help with personal problems.
